- First, as a solo attorney, I will not hand off your case to an associate or paralegal, as is often the case in larger organizations. If you hire me, your case will become my case. That means I am personally invested in every case I accept and every client I take on. You will be dealing with me personally throughout the matter. The legal advice and services that I provide you will be tailored toward resolving your unique situation. I return all phone and email messages promptly and will keep you updated continuously on the progress of your case.
- Second, I have a strict limit on the number of cases I will take on at one time. While some attorneys maximize their profits not only by accepting but disposing of or filing away as many cases as possible, my interest lies in providing the best possible legal representation for my clients. For me, that translates into a controlled case load and personalized attention for each and every client.
- Third, as a solo attorney, I have the flexibility to manage my practice that other attorneys do not have. For example, my work schedule is not dictated by some unspoken company policy, which means that I can use my time more efficiently than an attorney in a larger organization. I don’t have a paralegal, nor do I work in a fancy office setting, and therefore am able to keep my expenses down. I then pass these cost savings on to my clients in the form of lower legal fees. The end result is better, cheaper, and more focused legal services for my clients.
- Fourth, I generally charge flat fees, as opposed to an hourly rate, as is the custom in most law firms. That way a discussion can take place and decision reached about legal fees before the real work begins. You then have the peace of mind of knowing you won’t experience sticker shock some point down the road and I have the satisfaction of being able to focus on representing you rather than haggling over fees.
- Fifth, my practice is limited to criminal defense and civil rights litigation, areas of law that complement each other in both procedure and substance. As a result, when I am not working on a case, I am learning about the newest developments that have taken place in the criminal and civil rights arenas. I then implement this knowledge in my practice for the benefit of my clients and their causes. An attorney who doesn’t specialize in these areas of law is prone to overlook these details which may be costly, especially when you are faced with life altering choices. A lawyer cannot makes those choices for you but can, and, indeed must, help you make an informed and advantageous one.
